Since 1986, the James Beard Foundation has been celebrating, nurturing, and preserving America's culinary heritage and diversity through a variety of programs and special events. James Beard, who many consider the dean of American cookery, authored more than two dozen cookbooks, wrote hundreds of articles, and taught thousands of people how to cook and appreciate good food. Today, the Beard Foundation maintains the James Beard House in New York City's Greenwich Village as a performance space for chefs and administers the prestigious James Beard Foundation Awards for chefs, restaurants, food journalist, cookbook authors, and other culinary professionals. The Foundation also grants scholarship to culinary students and hosts conferences, readings, and continuing education classes to engage people with the fascinating, important, and delicious world of food.
In 2007, to celebrate the organization's 20th anniversary, we created the James Beard Foundation's Taste AmericaTM, a national food festival celebrating American cuisine. With guest chef dinners, cooking demonstrations, cookbook signings, samplings of artisanal, local, and seasonal products, as well as educational children's activities happening simultaneously in 20 cities around the country, the James Beard Foundation's Taste America has captured the culinary imagination - not to mention the taste buds - of the entire country.
